The Bridges Retreat 2018 brought together an exceptional collaboration of academics, policymakers and industry experts. Each participant applied their unique perspective to tackle the most pressing dilemmas faced by open societies in the digital age. Over the 48 hours we had together, future scenarios were mapped, policy frameworks were sketched, and many promising connections were made.
Throughout our discussions one core notion took shape, that Europe is uniquely placed to present a ‘third way’ for the governance and regulation of digital technology. Contrasting to the libertarian approach spawned out of Silicon Valley and the authoritarian model of China, this would be a new model to balance digital progress with open society values.
The following document is a synthesis of the main themes and concepts that emerged from our salon discussions and policy workshops.
